Pietro Mocenigo served as Doge for less than three years, dying in office in February 1476 after a reign defined almost entirely by military campaigning against the Ottomans. He had spent decades as a naval commander before his election, and the lira struck in his name belongs to a coinage type Venice was still refining — the lira as a denomination had only recently been formalized in Venetian silver, partly in response to the monetary demands of sustained warfare in the eastern Mediterranean.
