Turkey's lira coinage has undergone two dramatic redenominations since 2005, when six zeroes were stripped from the currency following years of chronic inflation that had made the old 1,000,000 lira note practically routine. Orhan, founder of the Ottoman state in the early fourteenth century, was among the first rulers to strike coins in the Ottoman name — his silver akçe established the monetary tradition this coin nominally descends from, across seven centuries of intervening history.
