Murad III, who reigned from 1574 to 1595, presided over the Ottoman Empire at its greatest territorial extent while simultaneously overseeing a catastrophic debasement of the silver akçe — a currency crisis so severe it triggered the Celali Revolts that destabilized Anatolia for decades. The Turkish Mint's decision to commemorate him on a circulation coin carries some irony given that history.
