Obverse description The obverse features the Maltese coat of arms prominently centered in the field, depicting a quartered shield supported on either side by two sea-horses (hippocampi) rampant, with a mural crown surmounting the shield and a scroll bearing the national motto below. The entire composition is rendered in bold relief with fine engraved detail. The legend MALTA is inscribed in large spaced capital letters along the lower periphery.
