Henrietta Szold founded Hadassah in 1912 and later organized Youth Aliyah, the rescue operation that brought tens of thousands of Jewish children out of Europe before and during the Second World War. She died in Jerusalem in 1945, just months before the war's end, having personally overseen the immigration of roughly 30,000 children. Israel's selection of Szold for the 1960 Hanukkah series — an annual commemorative tradition begun in 1958 to honor figures of Zionist history — placed her among a small group of individuals deemed foundational to the state's social and humanitarian character.
