Issued the same year Turkey reconverted Hagia Sophia from a museum back into a mosque — a decision announced by President Erdoğan in July 2020 and upheld by the Turkish Council of State after a court annulled the 1934 cabinet decree that had originally secularized it. The building had functioned as a museum for 86 years. This coin's release was effectively a commemorative response to that political moment, folded into the circulating bimetallic lira series rather than issued as a separate collector piece.
