Obverse description The Medici coat of arms, comprising a shield charged with the characteristic palle (roundels) of the Medici family, surmounted by a grand ducal crown, occupies the central field. A circular Latin legend surrounds the shield, reading FER·MB·MAG· / ·DVX·ETRVRIA·III·, identifying Ferdinando I as Grand Duke of Tuscany. The design is framed by a beaded border. The heraldic composition is rendered in the late Renaissance style typical of Florentine coinage.

Reverse description Two draped female figures, identifiable as mermaids or marine allegorical figures, are depicted flanking a hippopotamus (hippos) shown from below in the water, a distinctive emblem associated with Ferdinando I de' Medici. The scene is framed by a circular Latin legend reading CILIA·DOMIN·ECCL· with the date ·1591· at the base. The composition is enclosed within a beaded border and reflects the mannerist engraving style of the late sixteenth-century Florentine mint.
