Opmerkingen

Dago was the Japanese name for the island now known as Hainan, and during the occupation period local scrip of this kind filled the void left by disrupted currency supply chains. Village-level social clubs across occupied territories in Southeast Asia and the Pacific issued their own paper obligations when official currency became scarce or distrusted — these functioned as informal credit instruments within a closed community, rarely traveling far from the issuing body.

1945 is a transitional year: the Japanese surrender in August threw the status of all occupation-adjacent scrip into immediate legal ambiguity. Notes issued in that final year frequently had the shortest circulation windows of the entire wartime period.
