Bayezid I ruled the Ottoman state from 1389 until his capture by Timur at the Battle of Ankara in 1402 — one of the few Ottoman sultans to die in enemy hands. His defeat effectively dissolved the centralized Ottoman structure for over a decade, triggering the Ottoman Interregnum, a civil war among his sons that the empire barely survived.
