Reverse description A finely detailed rendering of the Blue Rock Thrush (Monticola solitarius), Malta's national bird, is depicted in profile perched upon a naturalistic rocky outcrop at centre-left, with a worm or insect held in its beak. The denomination 'Lm1' appears in bold block lettering to the upper right of the field. The design is enclosed within a beaded border and executed in high relief with close attention to the bird's plumage and posture.

Additional information

Malta's switch to a lira-based decimal system came with independence and was fully consolidated by the 1970s, but the Central Bank continued refining its circulating coinage through the 1980s as the island's economy matured. The nickel one lira was among the heavier circulating pieces in everyday use — substantial enough that Maltese shopkeepers reportedly kept them separate in the till.

Malta joined the EU in 2004 and adopted the euro on 1 January 2008, retiring the lira entirely. The 1986 issue had roughly two decades of potential circulation before demonetization.
