Acmonital — a stainless steel alloy developed in Fascist Italy and adopted by several postwar monetary systems looking to cut costs — was chosen for this series as Turkey's inflation began its slow, then accelerating, grind through the 1960s and 70s. By the time production ceased in 1980, the lira had lost so much purchasing power that the coin's face value was essentially ceremonial. The military coup of September 1980 reshuffled economic policy entirely, and a coinage reform followed within years.
