| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse presents a full-length frontal figure of a lion passant guardant, rendered in high relief in the Gothic manner, standing erect and facing the viewer — the heraldic lion that gives the denomination its name. Flanking the lion are two pointed oval shields, each bearing three fleurs-de-lis, a reference to the Franco-Scottish alliance and the Auld Alliance symbolism common on Scottish coinage of this period. The figure is contained within a beaded inner circle, with the circumferential Latin legend in uncial Gothic script running between the inner and outer borders. The outer border is decorated with a floral or foliate ornamental pattern typical of late medieval Scottish gold coinage. |
