| 背面描述 | A crowned rampant lion passant-guardant occupies the central field, depicted in the heraldic style characteristic of the Scottish royal arms, with the beast shown in profile facing left, one forepaw raised. The peripheral legend, struck in Roman capitals, reads · VICIT · VERITAS · 1558, incorporating the mint date. The design is contained within the irregular hammered flan, with the legend partially visible around the circumference due to the nature of the striking technique. |

Mary's first period of Scottish coinage, struck before her return from France in 1561, was issued under the regency government while she remained at the French court following the death of Francis II. The billon lion — colloquially the "hardhead" — was a workhorse denomination for small transactions, its silver content so debased by this point that it was essentially a copper coin with a nominal silver wash.
Spink 5445 is among the more elusive of her Scottish issues, with surviving examples frequently showing crude striking from worn dies.
