| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse presents a rampant lion passant guardant within the field, the heraldic symbol of Scotland depicted in the vigorous but stylised manner typical of hammered Scottish billon issues of the period. The lion occupies the majority of the central field, its form rendered with characteristic angular definition of mid-Tudor Scottish die-cutting. The surrounding circular Latin legend reads · VICIT · VERITAS · 1559 ·, bearing the motto 'Truth has conquered' alongside the regnal year. The flan is irregular in shape and the surfaces are heavily worn with a dark grey-brown patination, rendering some details of the lion's form and portions of the marginal legend weakly struck or obscured. The overall composition reflects the modest artistic standard of this small-denomination hammered billon issue. |
