| Additional information |
Sobhuza II holds the record as the longest-reigning monarch in verified history, having ascended to the Swazi throne in 1921 and ruled until his death in 1982. This issue was struck to mark his 80th birthday in 1979, three years before the end of a reign that spanned over six decades and saw Swaziland transition from British protectorate to independent kingdom in 1968. The .999 fine specification places it firmly in the commemorative bullion category rather than anything intended for circulation.
