Mswati III ascended the throne in 1986 at age 18, making him one of the youngest ruling monarchs in the world at the time. Eswatini — the country's name since the 2018 royal decree that formally retired "Swaziland" — is one of the last absolute monarchies on the African continent, and the coinage reflects that directly: no elected government, no parliamentary authority stands behind these issues, only the king.
KM#72 replaced the earlier bimetallic lilangeni that had circulated since the 1990s.
