The Democratic Republic of the Congo introduced the likuta — plural: makuta — as a subunit of the new zaire when Mobutu's government undertook a sweeping currency reform in 1967, severing nominal ties to the colonial-era franc. The Banque Nationale du Congo had been established only in 1964, and this series represents its first sustained small-denomination coinage in aluminum.
The 1966 date on earliest examples predates the official reform, placing those strikes in the transitional window when the new monetary system was being prepared but not yet proclaimed.
