In 1967, Anguilla unilaterally seceded from the newly formed state of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla, a political union the island had never wanted. With no coinage infrastructure and an immediate need for circulating specie, the provisional government counterstamped whatever silver coins it could source locally — Yemeni rials being among the most available, likely absorbed through Caribbean trade channels. The result is one of the more improvised monetary instruments of postcolonial history.
