Maximilian Emanuel governed Namur as part of his restoration by Louis XIV following the War of the Spanish Succession — a conflict that left him stripped of Bavaria and dependent on French patronage for nearly a decade. The 1713 date places this coin in the final months of that arrangement; the Treaty of Utrecht, signed that same year, forced his withdrawal from the Spanish Netherlands altogether. He would not recover Bavaria until 1714.
Small copper liards circulated hard in the southern Netherlands, and survivors in anything above worn condition are scarcer than the type's modest status suggests.
