Beschrijving voorzijde Bareheaded bust of Ferdinand of Bavaria facing left, wearing a ruffled collar, rendered in a somewhat crude hammered style typical of early 17th-century Liege coinage. The effigy occupies the central field, with the circular legend surrounding it. The coin exhibits the characteristic irregular flan shape associated with hammered copper issues of the period. A holed specimen, with a small perforation visible above the bust in the upper field.

Aanvullende informatie

Ferdinand of Bavaria held the Prince-Bishopric of Liège for nearly four decades, a tenure made turbulent by the Thirty Years' War raging across the surrounding territories. Liège maintained a studied neutrality through most of that conflict, which kept the mint productive even as neighboring mints went dark or were seized. The liard was the workhorse small change of the southern Low Countries, and copper issues of this type circulated hard — survivors in crisp condition are scarce precisely because they did their job.
