Desana was among the smallest feudal lordships in the Po Valley, a county whose coinage rights were perpetually contested and whose output was correspondingly tiny. The Delfino family held the county through the late sixteenth century under Imperial grant, but their minting activity attracted repeated scrutiny from neighboring Savoy and the Duchy of Milan, both of whom regarded such minor lordships as nuisances producing debased small change that undermined regional monetary control. Billon liards of this type circulated primarily in local markets along the Po corridor.
The three-year window 1584–1587 likely reflects the span between an Imperial privilege confirmation and a subsequent challenge to its validity.
