Bulgaria issued a series of commemorative copper-nickel pieces throughout the 1980s tied to international sporting events, largely as hard-currency earners through collector sales abroad rather than for domestic circulation. The 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics provided the occasion for this 1987-dated piece, part of that broader export-driven program. Most examples entered collections directly from mint sets and show virtually no wear as a result.
