Obverse description Portrait of St. Ivan Rilsky (Saint John of Rila, c. 876–946), Bulgaria's patron saint, first Bulgarian hermit, and founder of the Rila Monastery. The effigy of the saint occupies the central field, rendered in a detailed artistic style characteristic of Bulgarian commemorative coinage. The Cyrillic legend СВ. ИВАН РИЛСКИ appears in the field alongside the issuer's name БЪЛГАРСКА НАРОДНА БАНКА (Bulgarian National Bank).
