Additional information

Issued as part of Bulgaria's broader commemorative bullion program in the early 2000s, this piece was struck while the country was operating under a currency board arrangement that had pegged the lev to the Deutsche Mark — and then, following eurozone entry by Germany, automatically to the euro at a fixed rate. The currency board had been imposed in 1997 after a catastrophic banking crisis reduced the lev to near-worthlessness and inflation peaked above 1,000 percent annually.

KM#257 sees relatively low collector penetration outside Eastern Europe, keeping secondary market premiums modest against spot.
