This piece belongs to Romania's long-running commemorative leu series documenting Bucharest's urban history. Gas lighting reached Bucharest in 1857, when the city contracted with a foreign firm to illuminate its main thoroughfares — making it one of the earlier Eastern European capitals to adopt the technology, ahead of several Western cities that wouldn't convert from oil lamps for another decade.
