Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of the Romanian Academy, founded in 1866 under the name Societatea Literară Română during a period when Romanian intellectual life was scrambling to establish national institutions ahead of formal independence. The Academy standardized the Romanian language's orthography and produced the first comprehensive Romanian dictionary — consequential work that shaped how the modern language is written.
