Obverse description Bare-headed, bearded effigy of the aged King Carol I of Romania facing left, rendered in high relief with finely engraved facial features and full beard. The circumferential legend reads CAROL I REGE AL ROMANIEI, arranged along the upper arc of the coin. The dates 1866-1906, commemorating forty years of Carol I's reign, appear in the lower field flanking the engraver's initials A.M. The border consists of a continuous row of beads. The composition and engraving style are characteristic of the medallic work of Alphonse Michaux.
