Romania's silver leu coinage of this period was struck at the Brussels mint — not domestically — because Romania lacked the technical infrastructure for silver coinage production at scale in the 1890s. Carol I, a Hohenzollern prince imported to stabilize a chronically fractious principality, had guided the country through independence from Ottoman suzerainty in 1878, and the silver coinage of his reign was a deliberate assertion of that new status within the Latin Monetary Union framework Romania had informally aligned with.
