Tombac — a brass alloy — was adopted by Romania for commemorative issues partly due to its favorable striking characteristics and warm gold-like appearance at lower production cost than genuine precious metals. The Academy of Medical Sciences of Romania was founded in 1935 and suspended under communist reorganization, then reestablished in 1990 following the fall of Ceaușescu's regime.
