Moldova's 1 Leu was introduced in 1992 as part of the currency reform that replaced the Soviet ruble following independence. The Banque de France produced this series, a common arrangement for newly independent states in the 1990s that lacked domestic printing infrastructure capable of meeting security standards.

The 1994–2013 date span is unusually long for a low denomination — inflation eroded the note's purchasing power significantly over those two decades, yet it remained in production rather than being demonetized early.
