Greece's earliest copper coinage under Otto I was struck at the Athens mint, which had only recently been established — the country had no functioning mint infrastructure at independence and relied on foreign facilities through the 1830s. These leptons circulated in a kingdom still consolidating its monetary system after decades of Ottoman rule had left no coherent numismatic baseline to build from. The 1844 issues coincide with the constitutional crisis that forced Otto to accept a parliamentary government under military pressure.
