1 Leone Bank Anniversary

Issued to mark the tenth anniversary of the Bank of Sierra Leone, founded in 1964 following independence from Britain three years earlier. The bank's establishment was part of a broader push to replace the West African Currency Board, which had governed monetary affairs across British West Africa since 1912 — an arrangement many newly independent governments viewed as a residual colonial mechanism.

Fr#8 is the gold issue in this three-metal commemorative set, alongside silver and cupro-nickel versions struck under the same KM#26 series. Low original mintages across all three metals are typical of this class of African commemorative gold, where official figures were rarely verified against actual distribution numbers.
