Honduras introduced decimal currency in 1931, replacing the peso, and the lempira has been the national unit ever since — named after the sixteenth-century Lenca chieftain who resisted Spanish conquest. The 1 Lempira in this series ran across more than a decade of issue, with printing shared between the Canadian Bank Note Company and De La Rue, a split-production arrangement that accounts for subtle differences in plate quality and ink saturation between individual examples.
The "without vertical bar" distinction refers to a security element omitted from a subset of the print run — its absence is the diagnostic feature separating this Pick variant from closely related issues in the same period.
