The "Republic of the North" was a secessionist fantasy project associated with the early Lega Nord movement in Italy, which in 1992 was at peak political momentum following the Tangentopoli corruption investigations that were dismantling the postwar party system. These pieces were never legal tender — they were issued as propaganda tokens to assert the symbolic existence of a northern Italian state that did not exist and never would, at least not in this form. Umberto Bossi's movement used them as political theater.
