Obverse description The outer legend commemorates 700 years of city rights for Groenlo (1277–1977) and the denomination '1 Leeuwendaler'. The central field features a relief device of a medieval field cannon on a wheeled carriage with a stack of cannonballs below, accompanied by the dates 1277–1977 along the lower inner ring and the dialect motto 'SO VASTE AS GROLLE' in the upper field. Mint marks (cock and caduceus) appear flanking the lower legend.

Reverse description The outer legend reads the city seal inscription of Groenlo in Latin. The central device displays a heraldic shield bearing a rampant lion, framed by decorative scrollwork above and radiating lines to either side, reproducing the medieval secret seal of the city of Groenlo.
