| Beschrijving keerzijde | The quartered royal shield of James I, surmounted by a crown, occupies the central field. The shield displays the arms of England (three passant guardant lions) in the first and fourth quarters, France (three fleurs-de-lis) in the second quarter, Scotland (a lion rampant within a double tressure) in an escutcheon at the centre, and Ireland (a harp) in the third quarter, with additional subdivisions reflecting the Stuart royal arms. The shield is flanked by a lion and a unicorn as supporters, rendered in a characteristic early Stuart hammered style. The Latin legend FACIAM EOS IN GENTEM VNAM (I will make them into one people) encircles the design within a beaded border, referencing James I's aspiration to unite his kingdoms. |
