| Obverse description | The centre of the obverse bears the coat of arms of the University of Latvia, featuring an oak tree encircled by a laurel wreath; notably, the left side of the oak is rendered in conventional raised relief while the right side is produced as a laser-minted photographic image, symbolising the contrast between analytical science and vibrant life. The legend UNIVERSITAS LATVIENSIS arcs above the oak within the wreath, with the motto SCIENTIAE ET PATRIAE arranged beneath it. The outer legend LATVIJAS REPUBLIKA is inscribed in a semicircle along the upper periphery of the field, while the Roman numeral MCMXIX appears at the lower left and the date 2009 at the lower right, denoting the university's foundation year of 1919 and the year of issue respectively. |
