Issued to mark the centenary of the first Latvian-language ABC primer, this coin belongs to a long-running Bank of Latvia collector series that paired the humble 1 lats denomination with cultural and folkloric themes — a deliberate effort to keep the lats publicly visible as euro adoption loomed. Latvia had been targeting eurozone entry for years by 2010, and the lats was quietly being celebrated in collector issues even as its days were numbered. It was finally replaced by the euro on 1 January 2014.
