Sigulda, the subject of this issue, sits at the center of Latvia's Gauja National Park and has been a domestic tourism draw since the mid-19th century, when the Russian nobility built resort infrastructure around its medieval castle ruins. The Bank of Latvia's collector lats series, of which this is one installment, ran for roughly two decades and used regional and cultural subjects to build a coherent numismatic program rather than issue one-off commemoratives.
