| 正面描述 | At the centre of the obverse, a tall-masted sailing ship is depicted navigating a billowing, wave-filled sea, rendered in fine relief with dynamic artistic detail. A semi-circular legend reading '1 LATS' arcs to the right of the vessel, while the date '2013' is inscribed at the lower left of the field. The composition commemorates Wagner's sea voyage to Riga and the turbulent journey that is said to have inspired elements of 'Der fliegende Holländer'. |

Wagner's connection to Latvia is largely forgotten outside the Baltic states. He served as conductor of the Riga opera house from 1837 to 1839, a posting he took out of financial desperation. The debts he accumulated there eventually forced a harrowing sea voyage to London — storms so violent they reportedly inspired the tempest in Der fliegende Holländer. Latvia issued this coin on the bicentennial of his birth, a year shared with Verdi, which prompted commemorative programs across Europe.
