Latvia's "collector lats" program — which ran from the late 1990s through the country's euro adoption in 2014 — produced a series of small circulation commemoratives themed around traditional Latvian food and craft. The pretzel coin was part of this run, drawing on the deep Central European baking tradition that took hold in Baltic towns during the Hanseatic period.
