Latvia's "Lucky Coin" series leaned into the country's folk tradition of carrying a single lats coin for good fortune — a custom that gained particular currency after Latvia re-introduced the lats in 1993 following Soviet-era monetary disruption. The 2008 issue appeared just four years before Latvia's eurozone accession effectively ended the lats permanently in 2014, giving the series an unintended valedictory quality in retrospect.
