This issue commemorates Jāņi — the Latvian midsummer festival rooted in pre-Christian Baltic tradition — which had been suppressed during Soviet occupation and revived with particular cultural intensity after independence in 1991. The Ligo wreath, woven from oak leaves and wildflowers, is inseparable from that celebration. Latvia issued several themed 1-lats pieces in the 2000s as the currency neared its eventual replacement by the euro in 2014.
