Additional information

Krišjānis Valdemārs was a central figure in the Latvian National Awakening of the mid-19th century, most practically known for establishing the first Latvian-language navigation schools along the Courland coast in the 1860s — a direct challenge to Baltic German dominance over maritime trade. His push to train Latvian sailors and captains had measurable economic consequences, shifting local shipping away from German-controlled interests within a generation.

This issue is part of Latvia's long-running commemorative lats program, which the Bank of Latvia used aggressively between independence restoration and euro adoption to assert cultural memory in coin form. Valdemārs died in Moscow in 1891, never having seen an independent Latvia.
