Courland — historically Kurzeme — was the westernmost of Latvia's historic regions, and by 2003 had become a recurring subject in the Bank of Latvia's ongoing regional commemorative program. This issue belongs to a four-coin series honoring Latvia's ethnographic regions, each struck in sterling silver to the same specification. The Courland piece was the third released in that sequence.
The series drew on a deliberate cultural-recovery mandate: Latvia had regained independence only in 1991, and institutional efforts to reassert distinct regional identities through official coinage were explicit policy, not sentiment.
