Latvia's lats series of commemorative silver coins, issued through the mid-2000s, drew heavily on the country's winter sports identity — bobsleigh in particular carried national prestige, as Latvian crews had been competitive at the Olympic level since the sport's post-Soviet revival in the country. The 2005 issue falls within a broader program that used the one-lats denomination to document Latvian cultural and sporting life in the years between EU accession and the eventual replacement of the lats by the euro in 2014.
