Issued as part of Latvia's ongoing program of fine gold collector pieces, this coin was struck at a moment of considerable national momentum — Latvia had joined both NATO and the European Union in 2004, and the following year saw a wave of cultural pride expressed partly through numismatic commissions. The Art Nouveau theme is no accident: Riga holds one of the largest concentrations of Jugendstil architecture in Europe, much of it built between 1896 and 1913, and the city had been actively marketing that heritage to international audiences.
Struck to .9999 fineness at a reported mintage of 10,000 pieces.
