Latvia's one-lats coins of this period were part of a deliberate cultural program by the Bank of Latvia, issuing themed circulating commemoratives to sustain public engagement with the restored currency — the lats having been reintroduced in 1993 after five decades of Soviet-imposed ruble use. The ant design was selected through a process that favored indigenous natural motifs, part of a broader series that included mushrooms, a pretzel, and a watermelon slice.
KM#58 circulated widely and is common in worn grades as a result.
