| Obverse description | The full coat of arms of the Republic of Latvia occupies the central field, rendered in fine relief with its characteristic divided shield and supporting lion and griffin. The date 2003 appears in the lower portion of the field, flanked by the arms. The legend LATVIJAS arcs along the upper periphery, while REPUBLIKA is inscribed in a semicircle along the lower periphery, together forming the full title of the issuing state. |

| Additional information |
Latvia's one-lats coins of this period were part of a deliberate cultural program by the Bank of Latvia, issuing themed circulating commemoratives to sustain public engagement with the restored currency — the lats having been reintroduced in 1993 after five decades of Soviet-imposed ruble use. The ant design was selected through a process that favored indigenous natural motifs, part of a broader series that included mushrooms, a pretzel, and a watermelon slice.
KM#58 circulated widely and is common in worn grades as a result.
