Muhammad Shamsuddeen III ruled the Maldives as Sultan under British protection, and this issue dates to a period when the archipelago's traditional larin coinage — once a fish-hook-shaped silver wire currency traded across the Indian Ocean — had long since been replaced by struck discs.
